Is God Speaking to Me? A Biblical Guide to Discernment
Why Biblical Signs Are Not a Formula for Guidance
God gave signs at particular moments in Scripture, but those accounts describe what He chose to do; they do not command believers to invent signs for everyday decisions. A biblical event is not automatically a pattern we are meant to repeat.
Making a private rule—such as asking to see a certain bird before accepting a job—can turn an ordinary coincidence into apparent confirmation. The bird’s appearance does not prove God chose the job.
Jesus warned against demanding signs from a heart of unbelief (Matthew 12:38–39). That warning should make us cautious about treating the results of our own tests as authoritative messages from God.
Rather than asking circumstances to answer questions we have scripted, we can begin with Scripture, pray for wisdom, examine our motives, and seek godly counsel. God’s providence matters, but it need not be decoded as a private sign system.
Audible Voices and Biblical Discernment
God Has Spoken Audibly
At Jesus’ baptism and transfiguration, a voice from heaven identified Him (Matthew 3:17; 17:5). God is able to speak audibly, and Scripture records occasions when He did.
Not the Ordinary Pattern
These extraordinary events do not teach Christians to expect an audible voice for routine decisions. Scripture remains the reliable, authoritative starting point for knowing what God has revealed.
Test Every Claim
A vivid experience does not carry the authority of God’s Word simply because it feels unmistakable. Anyone who believes they heard a divine voice should test the claim against Scripture and invite careful counsel from mature believers.
A faithful way to seek direction
How to Discern Your Next Step
1
Begin with Scripture
Read what God has already revealed. Rule out any direction that contradicts His Word, and let its commands and wisdom shape your priorities.
2
Pray and Examine Your Motives
Ask God for wisdom, consider what is driving your desires, and hold inward impressions under Scripture’s authority rather than treating them as commands.
3
Seek Counsel and Choose Responsibly
Invite mature believers to challenge your thinking. Consider circumstances without making them secret signs, then make a wise choice and trust God with the outcome.
“I don’t know yet” can be a faithful answer when God has not clearly revealed which path to take.
A Reminder for the Waiting
When God Seems Silent
Am I Listening—or Looking for Confirmation?
Use these questions to examine your motives and bring your decisions under the authority of Scripture.
Am I seeking God’s wisdom or approval for what I already want?
Ask whether you would still follow the direction you sense if it led away from your preferred outcome. Bring your desires honestly to God rather than treating them as proof of His guidance.
Would I change course if Scripture challenged my plans?
God’s Word is a firmer guide than any impression. If a choice conflicts with Scripture, obedience means letting go of that choice, even when it feels compelling.
Am I willing to let mature Christians question my interpretation?
Invite trusted believers to examine both your reasoning and your motives. Their counsel can help you notice assumptions you might miss on your own.
Can I trust God without receiving a sign?
When both options are permissible and clarity does not come, pray for wisdom, make a responsible choice, and trust God’s providence with what you cannot foresee.
God Has Spoken—Learn to Listen Wisely
God reveals His power through creation and spoke through the prophets. He has made Himself known supremely in Jesus Christ and given us Scripture as His authoritative Word. The Holy Spirit helps believers understand and obey that Word, while God’s providence is at work throughout their lives.
These gifts call for attentive faith, not a hunt for hidden messages. A vivid dream, strong feeling, or striking coincidence may prompt reflection, but it should not be treated automatically as revelation. Let Scripture shape how you interpret your experiences, and hold uncertain conclusions with humility.
Seek Wisdom Without Demanding a Sign
Open God’s Word, pray for wisdom, and test your impressions against what He has revealed. Ask mature believers for counsel, then take the next faithful step you can see. You can trust God’s purposes even when He has not shown you the whole path.
